OTD: April 11th in Baseball History

Today is April 11th, and on this day, two notable events happened, one in 1917 and the other in 1962. On this day in 1917, Babe Ruth took the mound for the first time en route to his best career pitching season for the Red Sox. Also, in 1962 The New York Mets were born, playing their first game as a franchise.

Babe Ruth on (04/11/1917):

Babe Ruth, at 22, allowed only three hits and two earned runs, in nine innings against the New York Yankees, with the Sox winning 10-3. This was the start of the best pitching season in his career. Over the 38 starts Ruth made that year, he compiled a 24-13 Win-Loss record, a 2.01 ERA, and 1.079 WHIP throughout 326.1 Innings Pitched. Also, in 35 of those starts, Ruth pitched the entire game.

New York Mets' first game ever played vs. STL (04/11/1962):

After four years of no NL teams in New York, the New York Metropolitans (Mets) were born. They faced the St. Louis Cardinals in St. Louis and went on to lose the game 11-4. Throughout the next six seasons, the Mets would be the bottom feeders of baseball, going 325-648. However, thanks to Tom Seaver, they'd turn things around and win the whole thing in 1969. Last year the New York Mets as a franchise celebrated its 60th season.
