Happy Birthday to the late and great Ernie Lombardi. The Hall of Fame Catcher played most of his prime with the Cincinnati Reds, and he also played for the Brooklyn Robins, Boston Braves, and the New York Giants.
Career Statistics (1931-1947):
.306 BA, 1,792 HITS, 190 HR, 990 RBI, .358 OBP
Lombardi started his career at 6 feet 3 inches tall, at 230 lbs. At his career's end, he was closing in at 300 lbs. Baseball writer Bill James regarded him as "the slowest man ever to play major league baseball well." However, despite being chubby, it didn't stop him from calling a great game behind the plate and having a strong and accurate arm when throwing out baserunners. In terms of offensive production, he batted over .300 ten times, being a lifetime .306 hitter. He appeared in eight All-Star games, took home the 1938 MVP, won two Batting Titles, and was a part of the 1940 World Champion Reds.
Every year since 1955, the Cincinnati Reds have awarded the Ernie Lombardi Most Valuable Player Award to the team's MVP.
