Happy Birthday Bobby Doerr!

Happy Birthday to the late and great Hall of Fame career-long Boston Red Sox Bobby Doerr.

Career Statistics & Accolades (1937-44;46-1951):

.288 BA, 2,042 HITS, 223 HR, 1,247 RBIs, .362 OBP

  • 9x All-Star

From 1937-1951, he was the Second Baseman for the Red Sox. He never played one game or even one inning at any other position, and there wasn't a reason to move him. He led all AL Second basemen in Double Plays five times, Putouts and Fielding Percentage four times, and Assists three times.

Doerr was darn good when it came to the offensive side of things. While he wasn't the type of hitter Ted Williams was. However, he Walked 809 times while only striking out 608 times in his career. He had six seasons driving in 100 or more RBIs and hitting no lower than .270 in all but one season. Ted Williams called Doerr "the silent captain of the Red Sox."

When it was all said and done, Bobby Doerr was among the Top 10 great Second Basemen of this game's history. Had it not been for losing the 1945 season at age 27 due to the military. As well as being forced into retirement at 33 with spinal problems, he'd likely be in the Top 5. In retirement, he served as a scout and coach for the Boston Red Sox.
