Happy Birthday to Paul Waner. The Yankees may have the richest history of all-time great ballplayers, and well, so do the Pittsburgh Pirates, Paul Waner is one of them. Between 1927 and 1940, he played in Right Field with his brother, and fellow Hall of Famer Lloyd was in Center Field.
Paul Waner Career Statistics & Awards (1926-1945)
.333 AVG, 3,152 HITS, 113 HR, 1,309 RBI, .404 OBP
4x All-Star
1927 NL MVP
3x Batting Champion
Hall of Famer
Despite not being a home run hitter, he was an excellent hitter who used the whole field and ran the bases well. He averaged 200 Hits a year, as well as hitting .333 lifetime. Looking at his career, he led the majors in Doubles, Triples, and Runs multiple times. It didn't take long for Waner to perform great. In his second season, he won the MVP award.
Paul Waner 1927 MVP season:
.380 BA, 237 HITS, 9 HR, 131 RBI, .437 OBP, 114 RUNS
Paul Waner was that player who feared nobody, especially when he was at the plate. "I never let them [pitchers] get the better of me. If you flinch and show any fear, you're done." He is fifth all-time in Doubles with 605 and tenth all-time in Triples. In 1999, he was ranked 62nd on The Sporting News list of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players. During Warner's fifteen seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he hit over .300 thirteen times and 200 or more Hits eight times, leading the league in Runs, Hits, Doubles, Triples, Runs Batted In, and Batting Average. Also, he played very well in Right Field, leading the NL in putouts four times, and to this day holds the all-time career record for most putouts by a right fielder. I want to know why it finally took the Pirates until 2007 for them to retire his #11 jersey.
